Designers Create Dream Inauguration Dresses for Michelle Obama

It’s a big week for Michelle Obama: she turns 49 today, joined Twitter this morning and will stand by as her husband is sworn in to his second presidential term on Monday. (And here we thought our weeks were busy …)

Though we’ve been captivated by many of Mrs. O’s past dresses, we’re quite excited to see what she wears for Monday’s Inauguration and parties. According to WWD, the First Lady’s staff reached out to several different designers for samples and ideas — Derek Lam, Marchesa, Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, Tory Burch, Tracy Reese, Narciso Rodriguez, Naeem Khan, Thakoon and Jason Wu among them.

WWD also asked several designers to create dream dress sketches for the First Lady and her fashion-forward daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11. Some of our favorites include L’Wren Scott’s belted, lace-topped blue gown (left), and Nicole Miller’s stunning strapless red dress, with youthful, complementary blue frocks for the girls (below).

For the 2009 Inauguration, Obama selected a white one-shoulder dress by then-newbie Jason Wu; her stunning style moment instantly put the young designer on the map.

The dress was “a masterpiece,” the First Lady said one year after its debut. “It is simple, it’s elegant, and it comes from this brilliant young mind, someone who is living the American Dream.” No doubt her choice on Monday will be equally as beautiful — and important — as well. Tell us: How do you envision the First Lady looking on Inauguration day?

John Mayer Performs for First Time in 10 Months After Battling Voice Problems

John Mayer on stage in Bozeman

Sing it, John!

Forced to be all but silent for 10 months as he recovered from a second bout of vocal-cord problems, John Mayer returned to the stage Wednesday, performing "Speak for Me" at a benefit concert in Montana.

"And we're back," read a post on his Twitter page, along with a photo of Mayer singing in Bozeman.

He may be back, but he's far from 100 percent.

"I don't have a ton of range ... I'm a 70-year-old version of myself," Mayer said – as quoted on Twitter by Anthony Mason, co-host of CBS This Morning: Saturday, which will air a story Feb. 10 about Mayer's 10 months of vocal therapy.

"It's like a painter with just reds and purples," Mayer says of his range.

A full recovery will still take months.

Mayer, 35, has twice battled a granuloma in his throat. The problem, for which he had surgery in 2011, returned last March.

"They cut this thing out, then they inject your vocal cords with Botox, which freezes [them] so [they] can heal without smacking up against the other side," he said of the surgery.

Mayer, who has been dating pop star Katy Perry, has a house in Montana.

He organized Wednesday's benefit to help firefighters who battled last summer's Pine Creek Fire, which destroyed more than 8,500 acres of forest and farmland near Bozeman.

Joey Fatone Runs a Half Marathon - and a Full Marathon - in One Weekend

01/16/2013 at 10:25 AM EST

For two years, Joey Fatone cheered on his wife, Kelly, as she ran the Goofy Challenge at Walt Disney World: a half marathon followed by a full marathon the following day. But when Kelly fractured her foot two months ago, Fatone decided to run in her place.

"I just said, 'I'll do it for you,'" he tells PEOPLE. "And it became something I really wanted to do for her."

After competing on Dancing with the Stars, Fatone, 35, had decided to get into shape.

"I wasn't training to run a marathon," he says. "I just wanted to start working out. I wanted to build more muscle and upper body strength. I have no definition in my chest! So that's how I started. Then I decided, 'Let's see how far I can run.' And it went from there."

The night before the marathon, Fatone did something that could have derailed the entire thing: at the birthday party for his 3-year-old daughter, Kloey, he jumped on a trampoline for three hours. "I knew I could hurt myself," he says. "But it was her birthday. What was I going to do? I woke up the next day feeling really good and ready to run."

On Saturday, Kelly Fatone packed Joey a lunch – along with Advil and blister ointment. During the 13.1 mile trek, Fatone would run for a minute, followed by a minute of brisk walking. He finished the course in three hours, 10 minutes. "It really wasn't that bad," he says.

The next day, he tackled the 26.1-mile marathon. "I never thought, 'I'm not going to do this,' but I did think, 'What am I doing?'" he says.

Around mile 18, his left knee started to throb. "I knew if I stopped, I'd be screwed," he says. "So I just kept going."

Finishing the marathon in six hours, 19 minutes, Fatone was triumphant. "Your body can do so much if you mentally prepare," he says. "I really do feel like I can do anything now. It's a great feeling."

On another hot topic, pal Justin Timberlake's new song "Suit & Tie," Fatone has nothing but praise for his former boy bandmate. "I like it," he says. "It's a different sound for him, but Justin's music grows on you. After you hear it a few times, you love it!"

Sofia Vergara Wants Her Wedding to 'Be a Big Event'

01/15/2013 at 10:50 AM EST

Sofia Vergara doesn't know much about her eventual wedding day, but she's sure of one thing in particular: it's going to be over-the-top.

"If I'm going to do something, it's going to have to be a big event," the Modern Family star, who is engaged to Nick Loeb, told PEOPLE last Friday. "I just had my 40th birthday in Mexico. I had more than 100 people."

Unfortunately for the starlet, along with an extravagant affair comes appropriate planning, which she's too busy for these days.

"Now I don't have the time – and it will have to be one weekend when I have the time to plan something fun," she says. "I don't even know what I'm going to do."

One item she can cross of her list of things to worry about on her big day is designating someone to give a toast at the reception.

"We don't do that type of tradition," she explains. "[Nick and I want] more like of a party [with] music, dancing, a lot of food; not really sitting there hours and giving speeches."

Ironically, Vergara is the one doing some cheers of her own when she gives an impromptu wedding speech in the latest Diet Pepsi commercial, as part of her "Love Every Sip" campaign.

Just bust a move!

At the 14th Annual Warner Bros. and InStyle Golden Globes afterparty on Sunday, The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco was anything but shy on the dance floor.

After running over to Hayden Panettiere, the People's Choice Awards host looked the Nashville star up and down and exclaimed, "Gorgeous! Gorgeous!" about her blush, tiered strapless gown, an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Grabbing each other's hands, Cuoco and Panettiere were engulfed in "animated conversation," but things got even more fun once the deejay played Madonna's "Like a Prayer."

Cuoco and pals hit the dance floor, where she clapped, swayed and "was twirled by a male," the source adds. Later when Bell Biv Devoe's 1990 hit "Poison" was played, Cuoco held up her long dress while showing off a few more moves.

The actress was dancing so much that she "left the party with her heels in hand!" the source adds.

Demi Moore has a new love interest.

The actress and restaurant owner Harry Morton have been on several dates in recent weeks, including one to the South Beverly Grill in Beverly Hills, according to a source.

"Demi was very giddy during her date with Harry," says the source. "She was really into him and seemed to very much enjoy his company."

Moore, 50, and Morton, 31, have also hung out together at Moore's Beverly Hills home, the source adds.

In November of 2012, Moore and ex Ashton Kutcher announced the end of their marriage. He filed for divorce in December and has been dating his That '70s Show costar Mila Kunis.

Harry Morton, who founded Pink Taco restaurant chain, dated Lindsay Lohan in 2006 and was linked to Jennifer Aniston in 2010.

A source told E! Online, who first reported the news, "They are just getting to know one another ... [Moore is] in a really good place at the moment and is hopeful about the future."

Talk about a lot of talent in one place!

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Friday that Usher, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley and Katy Perry will be performing for the Kids' Inaugural Concert, set for Jan. 19 in Washington, D.C., in advance of President Barack Obama's being sworn in for a second term.

Events will also feature Nick Cannon, fun., Marc Anthony, Smokey Robinson and members of the Glee cast, among others yet to be announced.

Already announced was that Beyonc é, James Taylor and Kelly Clarkson will perform at the inauguration ceremony Jan. 21 on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.

This time around, the PIC is hosting two official balls: the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball for members of the U.S. military, and the Inaugural Ball, which brings members of the public together with local leaders.

Tequila trip!

As part of the launch of his new spirit brand, Casamigos Tequila, George Clooney stepped out on Tuesday night to celebrate its launch at Rocco's Tacos in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The Descendants actor was there with his fellow founders Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman to sample cocktails and mingle with locals.

"George and Rande did not separate the entire night. They both drank the Casamigos specialty cocktails being served," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

The "really friendly" Clooney also took time to take pictures with "almost every attendee at the event," the source says.

"There was one woman taking photos with her iPad and George was helping her get the best shots – he kept calling her 'the iPad lady'!" the source adds.

The promotional tequila tour – which is expected to bring the actor to L.A., Las Vegas and Dallas – kicked off with a short film starring Clooney, Gerber, Cindy Crawford and Stacy Keibler. In the minute long film, the group of friends play musical beds after a night out of drinking Casamigos.

Bethenny Frankel: I Feel Like a Failure After Divorce

01/09/2013 at 10:55 AM EST

Bethenny Frankel (left) and Ellen DeGeneres

Michael Rozman/Warner Bros.

Bethenny Frankel documented her marriage to Jason Hoppy on television – and now she's opening up about her divorce on television, too.

"I can't just only be on reality TV and show everything when it's fairy princess, fairytale, and then not take my hits when I have to," she says on Wednesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "Just going through something personal you have so many different emotions, and I feel like a bit of a disappointment to all of you. And, I feel like a failure."

"You are not a disappointment. You are not a failure," DeGeneres says.

"I feel like a failure. I really put it out there. I wanted the fairytale," Frankel responds. "I thought I had it. And [daughter] Bryn is my fairytale ... Love is everywhere. It's the road and you're on it. It has peaks and valleys, and that's what it is, but I don't know how people go through this because this is excruciating."

News of the split between the Skinnygirl mogul, 42, and Hoppy first broke just before the holidays with Frankel releasing a statement. "It brings me great sadness to say that Jason and I are separating. This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," she said at the time.

Frankel then filed divorce papers in early January.

The couple married in 2010 and are parents to daughter Bryn, 2½.

As for her decision to divorce, Frankel tells DeGeneres she "wanted to rip the Band-Aid off" so she could "start to heal," but that she struggles with what lies ahead.

"You know everything and one day you don't know. So I'm scared. I'm older. And I want to be able to say to people ... It's about what I do now ... I never thought I'd be a role model but I think to some people I am or have been," she says.

"This is an important time because it's about what I do next. How I handle myself now with grace, with dignity. Now is the time that matters."

Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing Will Be Honored with Dallas Funeral Episode

01/08/2013 at 10:15 AM EST

Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman

The late Larry Hagman will not be forgotten when Dallas returns to television on Jan. 28.

Hagman, who shot to fame as the show's star patriarch oil baron, J.R. Ewing, will be honored in upcoming episodes this season, including a funeral, set for the series' March 11 episode, EW.com reports.

The actor passed away on Nov. 23 at 81 from cancer, forcing the show's producers to make significant changes to the storyline, even as they mourned the show's longtime villain who was also a great friend. Extra scenes with J.R. that had previously been cut were put back in for episode 6, said executive producer Cynthia Cidre, who had to explain to viewers as she wrote future episodes why the key character was absent.

The tribute show will include many faces from the original Dallas series, which premiered in 1978, Cidre said. "It will be funny and appropriate to J.R., but it will also be sad because his family loved him," she said. "As do the fans."

His castmates continue to remember him and the indelible mark he left on the show over the decades. Patrick Duffy, who plays J.R.'s brother Bobby, said he and costar Linda Gray hold hands often on set for support and to remember their friend fondly.

"I'll reach over and just hold her hand for a while. As she will for me," Duffy told EW.com. "We just sit and smile and think, 'Gosh, that guy was our friend for 35 years. How lucky are we?'"

Hagman, a Texas native who had been married to his wife Maj Axelsson since 1954, will remain on the production's call sheets for the rest of the year as tribute. His Airstream trailer will also remain on set with a sign that says: "No. 1 is on hold."

Duffy said all of it was fitting: "This is the house that Hagman built."

Bethenny Frankel Steps Out After Filing For Divorce

01/07/2013 at 10:50 AM EST

It's business as usual for Bethenny Frankel.

After filing for divorce from husband Jason Hoppy a few days earlier, the Skinnygirl mogul took her beloved dog, Cookie, for a walk in New York's Tribeca neighborhood on Sunday.

Bundled up in a down jacket and boots, Frankel, 42, shielded her face with sunglasses as she strolled down the street with her pup trailing behind her.

Frankel first announced the couple's separation via a statement on Dec. 23. "It brings me great sadness to say that Jason and I are separating. This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," she said at the time.

The couple – who married after a whirlwind courtship and surprise pregnancy in 2010 – are parents to Bryn, 2½.

While Frankel and Hoppy's relationship played out in front of the cameras on Bethenny Getting Married and Bethenny Ever After, last year Frankel took time off from her life in the spotlight to focus on her marriage.

"Bethenny is devastated," a friend of Frankel's told PEOPLE earlier this month.

Melissa Joan Hart Shares Son's Plea for Less Phone Time

Celebrity Baby Blog

01/03/2013 at 06:00 PM ET

As a mom of three boys, Melissa Joan Hart knows all too well how to tackle even the toughest brotherly love.

But for her sons Mason Walter, 7 next week, and Brady Hart, 4½, it’s more often a lesson that love, well — hurts!

“They are boys, for a minute they are best friends and it’s usually 20 minutes and then it’s full on wrestling,” the Melissa & Joey star, 36, joked while cohosting Thursday’s Anderson Live.

“Then I have to pull them apart because the youngest one is always going to get hurt.”

Between her time spent overseeing her boys’ sibling bonding sessions and late night feeds with the family’s newest addition, 3-month-old Tucker McFadden, Hart is feeling the effects of sleep deprivation.

“I am a little exhausted. I have not [slept] a solid night. Two hours at a time,” the actress says. “It’s a loud house, it’s a very busy busy house.”

And she’s about to get even more caught up in all the commotion; The actress’s New Year’s resolutions include taking a time out from her phone and concentrating more on her kids. “[Brady] will be talking to me and he’s like, ‘Mommy, put the phone down. Look at me, talk to me,’” Hart admits.

When the going gets really tough, however, the hands-on mom isn’t afraid to occasionally pull out her secret weapon.

“My Bloody Mary, that’s how Mommy can do it all,” she jokes, sharing a picture of herself sipping on a cocktail while cradling her baby boy.

Jim Parsons's Big Bang Theory Character Honored with His Very Own Bee Species

01/04/2013 at 11:00 AM EST

Take it from The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons: playing a nerd on TV definitely has its perks.

The science world is paying tribute to the actor's Emmy-winning TV physicist, Dr. Sheldon Cooper, by naming a new species of Brazilian orchid bee after his character's goofy catchphrase, Bazinga!

Known formally as the Euglossa bazinga, the bug was discovered by Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio from the Universidade Federal de Uberlandia. Since the bee shares many similarities with the Euglossa ignita (also called the Western Brazilian orchid bee), the fact that they are now known as two completely separate species is a bazinga! to the science world, hence the name.

Socially awkward Sheldon would no doubt be proud of the achievement the science community has bestowed upon him.

"We are always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show," Steven Molaro, an executive producer for The Big Bang Theory, said in a statement. "Sheldon would be honored to know that Euglossa bazinga was inspired by him. In fact, after 'Mothra' and griffins, bees are his third-favorite flying creatures."

A year after they were first linked together, it looks like it could be the end of the road for Bradley Cooper and Zoë Saldana.

The on-again off-again actors, who publicly celebrated his film Silver Linings Playbook together in Los Angeles last month, spent New Year's apart, reports the New York Post.

While Cooper was in Europe, Saldana reportedly rang in 2013 with friends in Miami.

After a private dinner at Catch, she spent a couple of hours at the James Royal Palm hotel pool area.

"She was hanging out with Miami Heat stars Dwyane Wade and his girlfriend Gabrlelle Union, and Chris Bosh with wife Adrienne Bosh," a source at the hotel tells PEOPLE. "She looked happy and was dancing quite a bit. She was smiling all the time."

The Avatar actress, 34, split from her boyfriend of 11 years, Keith Britton, in November 2011.

Cooper, who was PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive that same year, has been getting lots of awards buzz for Silver Linings Playbook. The actor, who turns 38 on Saturday, is nominated for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for the role.

When reached, his rep had no comment.

Kate and William Spent New Year's Eve Apart

01/02/2013 at 10:30 AM EST

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge kicked off 2013 apart from one other – with helicopter pilot William participating in an attempted rescue of a man who had been swept out to sea in the first minutes of the New Year.

William, 30, was part of an RAF search and rescue crew scrambled at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to help find a 41-year-old dog walker who had gotten lost in raging seas at Blackpool, Lancashire. Sadly, the RAF Sea King helicopter was unable to find the stricken man, and searches by coastguard crews were continuing into early Wednesday.

Kate, meanwhile, was believed to be ringing in the new year at home with her parents in Bucklebury, Berkshire, where she and William spent their Christmas Day.

At his RAF base in North Wales, William was on the first responders' shift from early New Year's Eve into the start of the New Year, PEOPLE was told. He was also to spend a second 24-hour shift on or near the base as part of a second back-up crew.

As for Kate's New Year's Eve, she was seen at a gas station stocking up on Mini Cheddars snacks, according to one eyewitness.

William is expected to spend much of the early part of the year "concentrating on his flying," a Palace source tells PEOPLE, and he and Kate are not expected at any royal engagements in the first few weeks of '13.

Kim Kardashian Steps Out for New Year's Party after Pregnancy Announcement

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

Denise Truscello/WireImage

The year 2012 was good for Kim Kardashian. But, oh baby, is she ready for 2013!

"It's been so exciting," she told PEOPLE of the whirlwind of emotions she's felt since finding out she was pregnant. "We're very, very happy."

With just a hint of a baby bump showing under her form fitting black Julian McDonald dress, the reality star rang in the new year in Las Vegas with the man she's spent 2012 with: Beau and baby daddy Kanye West.

"I wish I could share a drink with you all, but I can't for a little while," she told the crowd at Mirage's 1 OAK just before leading a countdown to 2013.

With the crowd cheering and confetti flying as the clock struck midnight, Kardashian stood on an elevated banquet adjacent to the deejay booth and passionately kissed West. And for the next 25 minutes, the deejay played nothing but West's songs – much to the delight of his pregnant girlfriend, who smiled and sang along.

As the night continued, the duo rarely left each other's side, with Kardashian dancing behind West while her party sipped Grey Goose cocktails. Kardashian stuck to water as the Grammy award-winning rapper occasionally rubbed her belly.

Her VIP table littered with party hats, streamers and black and gold balloons, Kardashian appeared happy throughout the night, kissing West and chatting with friends and family in attendance, including mom Kris Jenner, longtime friend Brittny Gastineau and Lance Bass.

Now that the new year has begun, Kardashian is working on being healthy for her unborn child.

"I've felt good. I've felt no morning sickness but it isn't the easiest," she said. "People always say pregnancy is so easy and fun. It's definitely an adjustment; It's learning about your body, but I've felt really good."

While the announcement of Kardashian's pregnancy came as a surprise to a lot of people, she doesn't want to be surprised when it comes the sex of the baby.

She said, "Of course I do want to know!"

What Celebrity Events We're Most Excited for in 2013

12/31/2012 at 11:00 AM EST

As 2012 comes to an end, we're getting psyched for the New Year – and beyond. From big Hollywood weddings to a royal baby, 2013 is looking poised to be one to remember.

Award Show Laughs

Rick Gervais ruffled a lot of famous feathers during his years as host of the Golden Globes. Now, funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been tapped to helm the award show on Jan. 13. But do you think Ricky will give up the mantle that easily? We predict the British comedian will march up on stage, take the mic and pull a Kayne on those ladies. But watch out, Ricky, those Saturday Night Live alumni have the comedy chops to take any challengers.

And when Seth MacFarlane hosts the Oscars on Feb. 24, let's just say we're hoping for an irreverent, animated night.

Sparks Fly on American Idol

Forget about the contestants: We already know there's going to be serious diva drama on the new season of American Idol, which premieres Jan. 16. Video of a blow-up between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj has already gotten the web talking. But the real excitement will come when the live shows get started later in the season! Meow.

Wedding Bells!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got engaged the same year that Jennifer Aniston accepted a proposal from her love, Justin Theroux. Who could have asked for a better set-up? It's a race to the altar!

So, who will make it down the aisle first? Now that gay marriage is legal in more states, it seems like Brad and Angie – who for years said they wouldn't wed until everyone could – might finally tie the knot. (Brad must have been getting impatient: He recently donated $100,000 for marriage equality to help get the job done.) But Jen & Justin have been on the fast-track ever since they started dating. Justin popped the question after just a 15-month courtship.

We predict ... that J&J will make it official first: They'll jet off to Jen's favorite spot – Los Cabos, Mexico – for a beautiful, beachy wedding that's as much of a whirlwind as their romance.

Also, we have to wonder, will Angelina show off her famous legs in her wedding gown? We can only hope!

Baby Boom

We can't wait! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are going to welcome the next royal heir – or two? – in 2013. How much fun would it be if Will and Kate had twins? We can already see the made-for-TV-movie of their lives: Double Trouble at the Palace.

As for baby names, the odds-makers have Mary, Victoria and John as the top contenders, with 8 to 1 odds. Next, there are 9 to 1 odds for the names Diana and Frances. Philip, Charles and Anne are next in line with 10 to 1 odds. Even though it's got the odds against it with 16 to 1, we think the royal little one, if it's a girl, will be Elizabeth after the Queen. And we say if it's a boy, Charles will win out!

Plus, let's not forget American royalty: Earlier this year, Jay-Z denied rumors that he and wife Beyoncé are expecting another baby. But come on, Blue Ivy needs a sibling!? And we need Jay and Beyoncé to literally birth their own super singing group. Let's hear it for another little one for our favorite power couple!

Feel the Force

Disney bought Lucasfilm. Get over it. Let's just hope the force is strong for a new set of Star Wars films in 2013. How about we get Ben Affleck to direct the new trilogy – the dude has talent! Have you seen Argo? Heck, he can even suit up as Luke Skywalker with his BFF Matt Damon as wise-cracking bad ass Jason Bourne turned Han Solo. Too long in the tooth? What about on-screen rivals Robert Pattinson as Han and Taylor Lautner as Luke? They do know how to make an addictive trilogy!

Don't agree? Have at it: Tell us your dream Star Wars cast – and all your predictions for 2013 – below.
