Shakira's Foundations Are Transforming Thousands of Kids' Futures

Heroes Among Us

Shakira was 8 when her parents taught her what life was like for the most vulnerable people in her native Colombia. Visiting an impoverished area, "I saw kids living on the street, running around barefoot and sniffing glue," says the singer. "I made a promise to myself that I would become successful and do everything in my power to help those kids."

She has turned that vow into a second calling. Launched 17 years ago, her Pies Descalzos Foundation (and its U.S. counterpart, Barefoot Foundation) will open its seventh school and community center in Colombia next fall. The foundations provide education and nutrition to about 6,000 kids, plus jobs and resources for 30,000 others.

"Last year some of our students had among the highest placements on standardized tests in the country – and we are talking about kids who are the children of families displaced by violence and conflict," says Shakira, 35, who also supports projects in Haiti and South Africa. "There is nothing more gratifying than seeing a child who could have been recruited into drug trafficking or guerrilla warfare not only graduating from high school but excelling throughout and now preparing for university."

"That includes David Rueda, 17, who graduates this month. Going to college, he says, is "something that my parents or brothers and sisters couldn't [do]." Shakira hopes to pass on her commitment when she and soccer star Gerard Piqué, 25, welcome a baby next year. "I want my child to grow up in a fair and just world," she says, "knowing he too can be an agent of change."

Watch Shakira and more at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Eddie Redmayne: 5 Things You Should Know

12/07/2012 at 10:15 AM EST

Eddie Redmayne, breakout star of Les Miserables, is receiving awards buzz as the student French revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette, played by Amanda Seyfried. Redmayne, who also played Michelle Williams's love interest in My Week with Marilyn, is enjoying a booming career. But you'd never know that the 30-year-old Brit has Kim Cattrall to thank for his success, or that he was destined for a role in Les Mis as a child. P.S.: Redmayne's also won a Tony and an Olivier Award for the play Red.

Here are five things you should know about Redmayne:

• Kim Cattrall's approval was pivotal: "I did a play in London called The Goat," he recalls. "I won a prize, and I couldn't go be there, but my parents went, and Kim Cattrall gave the prize. When my dad saw that Samantha from Sex and the City was giving me a prize, then it affirmed in my parents' mind that they were allowed to let their son continue to be an actor."

In fact, the two stars didn't meet til years later, but Cattrall is anxious to see his latest turn: "In 2005 I had the honor of presenting him the Ian Charlston Award as 'the most promising new comer' at the Evening Standard Awards in the U.K.," she told PEOPLE Thursday. "Unfortunately he was away working, but I did meet him a few years later and he told me his father was impressed he won the award but over the moon I was presenting. I have followed his career ever since and cannot wait to see him in Les Miserables."

• His first Les Mis experience: "I saw it when I was 7 and wanted to be Gavroche, [the young street urchin who helps the rebels]."

• His 'oh s--t' moment on set: "We were lying in the sewers half dead, swimming in s--t, and you're actually lying there for 12 hours. We're doing a close-up, and [director Tom Hooper] is saying, ‘Hugh, Eddie, you need to be still. Or it doesn't look like you're dead.' We're like, ‘Dude! We can't control our bodily functions.'"

•Be careful going to karaoke with him: "My karaoke song of choice is "Bat Out of Hell". About three minutes in to the 12-minute song, I keep getting ‘shut up!'"

•He's pals with Spider-Man: "Andrew Garfield is is one of my best friends," he says. "I get great inspiration from he and Tom Sturridge, friends of mine who are my age who are doing great work."

Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum's wedding was picture perfect.

In an exclusive shot from the couple's weekend nuptials, the newlyweds – who met on season 7 of The Bachelorette and got engaged on the season finale – beam with joy.

Hebert, 28, and Rosenbaum, 35, say that even though their wedding was filmed for TV (it will air Dec. 16 as a two-hour special on ABC) their love is as genuine as it comes.

"The ceremony was simple, sweet and personal," Hebert tells PEOPLE in its new issue, on newsstands Friday. Adds Rosenbaum, "We didn't want it to be a circus."

On the day they exchanged vows, Hebert reiterated their commitment to keeping their relationship focused on the important things in life.

"Today is all about our friends and family," Hebert said. "It's about standing with J.P., looking around at all the people we love in the same room there to celebrate our love."

The wedding was attended by family, friends and fellow Bachelor and Bachelorette alumni, including Ali Fedotowsky, Emily Maynard, Jason and Molly Mesnick and Ryan and Trista Sutter. The franchise's on-air host, Chris Harrison, officiated the ceremony.

It's sweater weather!

With the holidays just around the corner, it's time to bust out your traditional ugly – and even not-so-ugly – Christmas sweaters ... even Hollywood is doing it.

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi got into the spirit of the season with a colorful sweater, posting on Instagram, "Tis' the season for ugly sweaters & messy closets."

But Melissa Joan Hart takes her love of holiday wear to the next level with a tacky sweater competition.

"It just popped in my head that I wanted to do something really silly," the actress told PEOPLE last year. "People got very, very creative. But my favorite thing to do was to go on eBay!"

Even her husband, Mark Wilkerson, joined in the fun. "Every night I'd have 30 emails of links to different sweaters she thought were ridiculous to look at," he said at the time.

They're getting closer by the day.

After strolling together in Central Park on Sunday, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles graduated to publicly holding hands early Tuesday after a long night in New York City.

The pop star and her potential boy-band beau were photographed arriving at her hotel after 4 a.m. – she in a thigh-length black coat, he in dark pants and a T-shirt.

Styles, 18, and his band One Direction performed at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, while Swift, 22, attended and performed at the 2012 Ripple of Hope Awards a dozen blocks north at the New York Marriott Marquis.

They met up after at One Direction's afterparty.

At the Ripple of Hope Awards, Swift was honored for her commitment to social causes by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights. Several members of the Kennedy family – though reportedly not Swift's ex-boyfriend, Conor Kennedy – were in attendance.

David Oliver Relin, Co-Author of Three Cups of Tea, Commits Suicide at 49

12/03/2012 at 10:45 AM EST

David Oliver Relin, a journalist who co-authored the controversial best-selling book Three Cups of Tea, has committed suicide, the New York Times reports. He was 49.

Relin, who co-wrote the 2006 book with Greg Mortenson about how Mortenson, a former mountain climber, started building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, "suffered emotionally and financially as basic facts in the book were called into question," the Times says.

His family said Relin "suffered from depression" but would not give further details surrounding his death.

As a journalist during the '90s, Relin focused on telling humanitarian stories including articles about child soldiers and traveling to Vietnam. This work was what led Viking Books to pair him with Mortenson.

Three Cups of Tea sold over four million copies, but in 2011 60 Minutes and author Jon Krakauer – who released an E-book titled Three Cups of Deceit – both questioned the validity of major points in the book.

Relin did not speak publicly about the accusations, but hired a lawyer to defend him in a federal lawsuit that claimed he and Mortenson defrauded readers. The suit was dismissed earlier this year.

Relin is survived by his wife, Dawn; his mother, Marjorie; his stepfather Cary Ratcliff; and his sisters Rachel Relin and Jennifer Cherelin.

Dr. Andrew Moore Performs Life-Changing Surgeries for Free

When an increasing number of his patients couldn't pay for their life-saving surgeries, Dr. Andrew Moore decided he wasn't going to just stand by or send them away without doing anything.

So he found a way to make the procedures completely free of charge.

The Lexington, Kentucky-based plastic surgeon initially started waiving his fees for some patients, but soon found that wasn't reaching far enough. He grew disheartened every time a patient told him he couldn't afford to have a melanoma removed because he had no insurance. "It was so frustrating," says Moore, 63. "How was I going to take care of them?"

"We figured out the things we needed to do to make this work," says Moore. "It makes a difference in individual lives."

In 2005 the doctor launched Surgery on Sunday, a nonprofit group of more than 400 volunteer surgeons, nurses and medical professionals who perform free gall bladder removals, orthopedic repairs and other outpatient procedures in a donated surgical facility in Lexington.

To date, Moore's group has performed about 4,500 surgeries – and has a waiting list of more than 500. The program has also spawned offshoots in Louisville and three other Lexington hospitals, with the hope to expand nationwide.

Raising funds through grants and donations to cover malpractice insurance and medical supplies, Moore's band of medical good Samaritans has changed the lives of people like Michael Weyls, who lived in pain and terror after being diagnosed with a cancerous lesion he couldn't afford to have removed.

A doctor he knew referred him to Surgery on Sunday; Moore performed three surgeries and rebuilt Weyls's nose. "It could've killed me, and Dr. Moore worked a miracle," says Weyls. "I thank God for this man."

It sounds like mighty big gulp for a relative novice, but Carrie Underwood has been signed to play arguably the most-beloved nanny in the history of entertainment – in the most beloved musical of all time.

The country-singing fourth season American Idol winner, 29, will play Maria von Trapp in next year's live TV broadcast of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, it was announced Friday.

"Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, which plans to air the three-hour show (based on the original Broadway version) sometime around the holiday season a year from now.

"She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist," Greenblatt said in a statement, referring to von Trapp – who was first immortalized on Broadway in 1960 by Mary Martin, then in the Oscar-winning 1965 Best Picture of the Year by Julie Andrews.

Underwood's previous acting credits were roles on TV's How I Met Your Mother, as the love interest of Ted (Josh Radnor), and, in her film debut last year, as a church leader in Soul Surfer, a coolly-received feature about real-life shark victim Bethany Hamilton.

No word yet on who'll play the dashing captain with the whistle.

It's grandbaby no. 12 for Judge Judy, and the famously tough TV star has some words of wisdom – as always.

"Welcoming this beautiful little girl is a treat, but whoever said it's cheaper by the dozen ... hasn't had a dozen grandchildren," Judy Sheindlin told the New York Post Thursday.

Sheindlin's son Gregory Sheindlin, a lawyer, and his wife Laurie Sheindlin, a video producer, are now the parents of their first child, Daniella Grace Pila Sheindlin.

Judy and her husband Judge Jerry Sheindlin, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of New York, have five children between them and now a nice (and even) number of grandkids. Congrats!

Christina Aguilera Faces Major Blow on The Voice

Monday night on The Voice, the coaches were confident, but some of the contestants were seeing green.

After Amanda Brown and Trevin Hunte opened with Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night," the first save was revealed. An ecstatic Cassadee Pope from Team Blake celebrated her win, before Cee Lo Green treated viewers to another surprise – a duet with Kermit the Frog to the signature Muppet tune, "Bein' Green."

Voters also rescued Team Adam's Amanda Brown. After reveling in her victory, Melanie Martinez, Nicholas David, Terry McDermott and Bryan Keith joined her for a rendition of Plain White T's "Rhythm of Love."

Then Team Adam's Melanie Martinez got the good news she was safe for another night, followed by Cassadee Pope and Dez Duron's singing Rihanna's "Hate That I Love You." Team Cee Lo's Nicholas David then found out that he still has a spot on the show.

But with room for only two more singers, Team Cee Lo's Cody Belew said goodbye to The Voice, along with Team Christina's last remaining member, Dez Duron.

"You will always be on Team Xtina, and I will always support you," Aguilera told him.

Trevin Hunte and Terry McDermott rounded out the top six, which means they'll be performing again on Monday's show.

Has the Simpson family suffered another split?

The New York Post's Page Six reports that after a year and a half of dating, Ashlee Simpson and Vincent Piazza have called it quits.

"Vincent has been working a lot, so he hasn't been able to spend as much time with Ashlee, which has caused some problems," a source tells the newspaper. "It was a mutual agreement to split, but things have been bumpy for a little while, so perhaps they might reconcile."

The 28-year-old singer and Boardwalk Empire actor first began dating in 2011, shortly after Simpson split from split from her husband of three years and the father of her now 4-year-old son, Bronx, Pete Wentz.

News of the split follows Simpson's parents, Tina and Joe, filing for divorce after 34 years of marriage.

Anne Hathaway: I Look Like My Gay Brother in Les Misérables

Anne Hathaway

With its theatrical release still 30 days away, Tom Hooper's Les Misérables is already being touted as an Oscar contender for Best Picture.

The movie musical screened for the first time on Friday afternoon at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York, where The Hollywood Reporter was on hand to report on general reactions.

Although Anne Hathaway's role as Fantine in the film is brief, she makes an "indelible impression" especially during "I Dreamed a Dream," THR writes.

Hathaway – who told attendees she spent four months working with a vocal coach before the cast assembled for nine weeks of rehearsal – was willing to cut her hair short for the role, even though it meant she'd "be almost bald" for her September nuptials to Adam Shulman.

"When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother," she said at the screening.

Hathaway has not been shy in divulging how she transformed into Fantine. She recently spoke candidly to Vogue about her extreme dieting to prepare for the role.

The Academy Award-nominated actress, 30, began the process with a strict cleanse, resulting in a 10-lb. weight loss. Then, she lived off two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day for two weeks, causing her to lose 15 more lbs.

"I had to be obsessive about it," she said in the magazine's December issue. "The idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience – and I don't judge it in any way – it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."

Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman

Patrick Duffy is remembering his Dallas costar Larry Hagman, who died on Friday after a battle with throat cancer.

"Friday, I lost one of the greatest friends ever to grace my life. The loneliness is only what is difficult as Larry's peace and comfort is always what is important to me, now as when he was here," Duffy said in a statement. "He was a fighter in the gentlest way, against his obstacles and for his friends. I wear his friendship with honor."

On Dallas, Duffy, 63, played Bobby Ewing, the brother of Hagman's notorious oilman J.R. Ewing.

Linda Gray – who played Sue Ellen Ewing, Hagman's wife on the series – expressed her condolences on Saturday.

"Larry Hagman was my best friend for 35 years. He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew," she said in a statement released to PEOPLE. "He was creative, generous, funny, loving and talented and I will miss him enormously. He was an original and lived life to the fullest. The world was a brighter place because of Larry."

Michelle Obama and Daughters Welcome Christmas Tree at White House

11/24/2012 at 10:15 AM EST

'Tis the season!

Michelle Obama and daughters Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11 – assisted by their not-so-little helper Bo Obama – welcomed a Christmas tree to the White House on Friday.

The 19-ft. Fraser fir from Peak Farms in Jefferson, N.C., arrived on a red and green wagon drawn by two Clydesdale horses while the Marine Band played the classic carol "Oh Christmas Tree."

How festive!

According to tradition, the tree will be displayed in the White House's Blue Room and the First Lady will select and supervise the decorating.

After sampling the scent of the tree's needles, Ms. Obama reportedly gave a thumbs-up and told onlookers, "It's a go."

Tom Cruise Reunites with Suri for Thanksgiving

Suri and Tom Cruise in January 2012

Sharpshooter Images/Splash News Online

Tom Cruise has a very special reason to be thankful this holiday.

After more than three months apart from his 6-year-old daughter Suri – the pair were last together on Aug. 5 after a week-long vacation – the actor, 50, welcomed his little girl to London earlier this week.

"He's super excited" about the visit, a source tells PEOPLE.

Mom Katie Holmes spent Thanksgiving in Toledo, Ohio, with the rest of the tight-knit Holmes clan. The actress, 33, had the day off from her Broadway comedy Dead Accounts.

For Cruise, the long-awaited reunion was especially sweet. Based in London since mid-August, where he is deep in pre-production for the sci-fi action film All You Need Is Kill, the actor has been struggling to cope with the distance between them since Holmes filed for divorce in June and was awarded primary custody of the couple's only child.

Although Cruise has been "heartbroken" by the situation, as his friend Christopher McQuarrie recently told PEOPLE, he and Suri have been speaking by phone daily. And sources on both sides have said that both Cruise and Holmes are continuing to try to work things out amicably. "They are all about co-parenting," a Holmes pal said in September.

Jon Bon Jovi says his family has been touched by public support and will move forward after his daughter's arrest and hospitalization for a heroin overdose.

Speaking with Fox 11 in L.A., Bon Jovi called the Nov. 14 episode in a dorm room at New York's Hamilton College involving daughter Stephanie Rose Bongiovi, 19, a tragedy. Charges of drug possession against her eventually were dropped and she recovered at a local hospital.

"This tragedy was something that I had to face too, so we'll get through it," said Bon Jovi, 50, also father to three younger children with his wife of 23 years, Dorothea Hurley. "And people's incredible warm wishes for my family and I have been really reassuring. So, we're good."

Bon Jovi, who supported the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund along with fellow native Bruce Springsteen, also spoke about his rock world and the issues that come with it.

"It's human. What I do for a living, it seems glitzy and glamorous but if you don't take it too seriously it's a great way to make a living," he said. "And then life goes on. Things happen."
